HONOLULU (KITV4) — The Mauna Loa volcanic eruption is influencing the Hawaii hotel investment market, according to a report out Wednesday by Honolulu-based hotel investment firm Powell & Aucello.
One of the unique characteristics of the Hawaii hotel investment market – in addition to being totally dependent upon visitor arrivals – is that a volcano can influence the market.
Powell & Aucello says they were asked Wednesday by a group considering a Big Island investment about the Mauna Loa volcano.
What is not known yet is if the vog causes more cancellations than reservations booked by visitors hoping to see the lava flows.
The report says visitor arrivals are down 5% for the month of October.
In the meantime, total “air seats” to Hawaii for November through January are slightly above 2019 levels.
